Maritime Heritage
Museum – Mamallapuram (INDIA)

The Tamil Nadu government will be setting up a maritime heritage museum in Mamallapuram later this year. The submarine museum is being set up with twin purpose – to attract tourists and make youth to take up a career in the Indian Navy.

Submarine ex-Vagli was towed from Visakhapatnam Naval base and arrived at Chennai on 25th March 2013 with the intention of beaching it at mamallapuram on a specially erected platform, where it will remain as a centrepiece of maritime heritage museum. The museum will be set up on 30acres of land abutting the beach near the Shore Temple in Mamallapuram.

The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) will implement the first of its kind project on behalf of the State government by converting the decommissioned submarine into a Naval museum and setting up the maritime heritage museum with facilities such as maritime heritage, marine technology, food courts, audio-visual studio, souvenir shops and aquarium on Build, Own, Operate and Transfer model.       


About INS Vagli
ü INS Vagli (S42) was a Vela-class diesel-electric submarine of the Indian Navy.
ü It was Commissioned in 1974
ü  INS Vagli  the oldest operational submarine of the Indian Navy was decommissioned after 36 years of active service on 9 December 2010.
